Joik
Joik is an ancient Sámi way of singing consisting of melodic sounds, often without words. It is said that the joik is Europe´s oldest singing style.
The joik is a way of expressing a feeling or a person as if you actually are it – you become a part of what you joik.
For a long time, the Sámi have been subjected to oppression and colonization. Joik was for a time in history considered sorcery and anyone who practiced it could be sentenced to death.
Recently, joik has started to be heard more and more publicly.
